"This book contains practical help for dealing with all problems in education and so deserves to be widely read by all concerned." The Rt Hon The Viscount Whitelaw KT, CH, MC
'Headmasters have powers at their disposal with which the Prime Ministers have never yet been invested'. So wrote Churchill in 1930. That authority may now be somewhat tempered – or at least more subtly exercised – and Heads are no longer the autocratic figures of yesteryear. However a person assuming a headship for the first time finds himself or herself in a new vocation very different from the deputy's or departmental post vacated only weeks before. Various managerial and training courses are now available for the novice Head and serve an invaluable purpose. This book attempts to complement and supplement what may be gained from them.
Fifteen current or recent Heads, all members of the Headmasters' Conference, here attempt to pass on practical advice over the wide spectrum of tasks and responsibilities that face both new and established incumbents. It is guidance garnered from the agony and ecstasy of many years' experience. The contributors have necessarily drawn on their knowledge of secondary schools in the independent sector, but their reflections and counsel have relevance for those taking up headships, and indeed, for Governors, in all parts of a very fluid educational scene in which the demands of management are ever increasing and where the need for wise and informed leadership has never been greater.
